Redecorators 'could benefit from professional advice'
Despite the boom in popularity of television programmes about home design, homeowners feel more confident about the talents of a paid professional, according to an expert.
Interior designer Naomi Porter said that the programmes had inspired people but turned to professionals to design their living space.
She said the most common changes that people made to their homes were spatial ones, which improved usable space and aesthetic pleasure - some of which can be paid for using help with loans.
Ms Porter, who also has experience in an architectural setting, recommends environmentally-friendly products and solutions where she can.
"I know many clients feel they have saved money by taking advice before spending on the wrong solutions," she said.
"But this is not something everyone can afford."
A recent Halifax Home Improvement Survey highlighted people's preferences when looking to purchase a property.
Some 63 per cent said green credentials were important to them while to almost 40 per cent the sitting or living room and kitchen were the most important features from a decorative point of view.
