Energy price rises hit Brits hardest
British consumers have been hit by the most dramatic gas and electricity prices rises in western Europe, it has been revealed.
According to data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development UK (OECD), energy prices have risen by 13.6 per cent since the start of 2008.
This compares with an increase of 12 per cent in France and 9.5 per cent in Germany
Meanwhile, the Netherlands has experienced a rise of just 2.8 per cent.
The rises to tariffs imposed by energy companies have added hundreds of pounds to the average household's gas and electricity bills, with all of the UK's big six energy companies introducing double digit increases.
Consumer groups have been quick to condemn the companies over the move which they claim is unjustifiable given the large operating profits announced by the firms.
The OECD's figures were revealed today at a summit of large-scale gas users which examined the soaring prices for energy.
